| The 1st Lindsay Davidson
Composition Competition,
2011-2012
Purpose
The
purpose of this competition is to help create a concert hall repertoire
for 'bagpipes' and so create an area of musical activity for future
'pipers to play and audiences to enjoy. It is also to raise awareness
of bagpipes. This (2011-2012) is the first edition of the competition.
Instructions
on how to write for bagpipes are available here:
http://www.lindsaydavidson.co.uk/writebagpipes.html
The Piece
- The piece
should be for smallpipes
or borderpipes
and harp
(pedal or lever, 36 strings). It may use both smallpipes and
borderpipes but the composer should remember that only one piper will
be playing and allow sufficient time to change instruments. Only one
harp should be used.
- There are no upper or lower
limits on duration.
- The pipe part may have written
in gracenotes but this is not a requirement.
The Prize
There
will be one prize awarded of GBP250 (two hundred and fifty pounds
sterling) plus a recording by Irena and Lindsay Davidson. The recording
will be published here and may be used on future CDs.
Two
discretionary second prizes will be awarded of recordings of the piece.
Judging Criteria
The piece will be
judged on the following criteria
- Artistic
values - clear form, clear musical arguments, consistent musical
language (harmonic and rhythmical)
- Technical values
- competent writing for the instruments such as would be required for
any orchestration exam
- Originality - there are no
stylistic restrictions - avant garde, traditional in character,
experimental - everything is needed, therefore everything will be
considered. It should be clear though that the composer has his or her
own 'musical voice'.
It is understood that writing
for bagpipes is unusual (!!) and that composers may wish to have some
advice. Up to two consultations on the bagpipe part will be permitted
with Lindsay Davidson. The part will be reviewed and suggestions given,
but only two consultations will be permitted per piece. This is
entirely without prejudice.
