| Bagpipes and Ensemble
This
is not a complete listing, but gives basic information about duration,
first performance, and instrumentation of the pieces. Some have a pdf
of the score, or of part of the score and also either an excerpt of a
recording or a midi or mp3 (from midi) of the piece.
The titles
are listed under their appropriate section. Some pieces have been
aranged for several different ensembles, and as the forms are sometimes
different, there are listed separatey.
There
are a few things which should be noted about this work. Bagpipes have a
very small repertoire with orchestra as it stands, and often it takes
an effort to convince condutors, programmers and even pipers to give
this a chance. Therefore, popular and traditional pieces have been
arranged and included, as well as original compositions of different
styles. This repertoire, whilst largely 'conventional', has been
augmented by some more challenging and contemporary sounding pieces.
In total Lindsay has
composed, arranged and performed over 60 pieces for various such
ensembles, please be patient and keep coming back as this page will be
updated.

Arrangements for Bagpipes
and Strings
Conductor Jan Jazownik
asked for well known and popular classical pieces for pipes and string
orchestra.
Eine Kleine Nachtmusik - The entire first momvement of Mozart's serenade led
by highland pipes and backed by the strings. This asks distinctly unusual
questions of the piper, but is fun toplay.
Duration 6"51
New World Symphony slow
movement - known in Britain as the
'Hovis ad', known to pipers as 'Going Home'. The slow movement from Dvorak's
New World Symphny in original harmonies but otherwise re-organised to make the
best use of the pipes. Also arranged for borderpipes.
Duration 3"20

Auld Reekie's Lament
- composed for the Edinburgh Quartet and premiered by them in

(Edinburgh) sorrows of the past, but not to forget to celebrate the
future..
5 minutes.
Lament for the Lime Tree
- composed for a performance with the Edinburgh Quartet in February
2004 sponsored by Napier University. The brief was to write something
extremely unusual and very challenging. This is a fully worked out
piobaireachd for string quartet, smallpipes and fuly chromatic
borderpipes (1 piper changing betwen instruments). The language and
style of this piece is very much modern and has some striking harmonies
and rhythmic complexities whilst in places the conventional features of
piobaireachd come through in the quartet.
First performance Edinburgh 2004 Edinburgh Quartet. Recording for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Duration 5"11
Borderpipes Suite - the string quartet version of the borderpipe concerto.

McGuire's Jig
- a traditional jig arranged for smallpipes and quartet. Another
version, slightly different has also been made for string orchestra and
smallpipes. A dark jig, somewhat mysterious with sharp syncopations
towards the end.
First performance Krakow 2002 Amar Corde Quartet
Duration 3"10
Pipe Marches
- two highland pipe marches arranged for borderpipes and quartet. Each
march lasts 1"20 and both are light and lively in character. Very
simplistically arranged for that 'folky' feel. This can be played
without pipes.
First performance Krakow 2002 Amar Corde Quartet
Duration 2"40
Eightsome Reels - yet another version fo the eightsome reel set this time for hihgland pipes and string quartet. Fast and driving dance.

The Gothenburg Salute -
Written for the Baron of Prestoungrange to celebrate the opening of the
Prestoungrange Gothenburg. This is the ground and first variation of a
full length piobaireachd. Unusually this was conceived as a brass
quintet piobaireachd and the pipe Salute was worked up from there.
Somewhat in the character of a processional this is a dignified and
uplifting Salute.
Duration 2"11
Clumsy Fingers

in 2004 as part of an ongoing project to create a repertoire for

in 2004 as part of an ongoing project to create a repertoire for
bagpipes and brass quintet.
Duration 2"20
Bagpipes and Choir
Charles Lament -
this involves borderpipes in A and highland pipes and is very
challenging for the piper. Based on A lament written for Prince Charles
Edwards Stuart, ths is a contemporary recreation using canntaireachd in
the choir part and some energetic percussion (tom toms, bass drum, tam
tam). The pipe part includes a full scale piobaireachd.
Mixed choir with white voice tenor solo
Duration 5"11
First performance 20 February 2007, Nowy Sacz, Poland conducted by Andrzej Citak with the choir Scherzo.
Anna - part of a concert suite from the opera 'Tulsa'. Please see Tulsa page for further details and click here for the Celtic Triangle version of this piece.
